Exercise 1:
“Place”, in most people’s minds, means no more than a physical environment. People regard “place” as a synonymous with “space”. They do not differentiate one from the other. However, “place” is not an indifferent word which carries no meaningful quality. On the contrary, the “place” itself carries human beings’ feelings and experience. For the truth is that the construction and maintenance of a place have strong relationship with people’s activities. The interaction of place and people help both to develop mutually. In this essay, then, many instances of how human and place impact each other will show that place is never a purely inanimate space.
Exercise 2:
In the Introduction to “They Say/I say”. The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein provide termplates designed to help you with the structure of writing and teach you how to engage in different kinds of critical thinking. Specifically, Graff and Birkenstein argue that the types of writing templates they offer will eliminate the writer’s creativity and originality. As the authors themselves put it, “the above template and the others in this book will actually help your writing become more original and creative, not less.” Although some people believe pre-established forms undermine creativity, Graff and Birkenstein insist that creativity and originality lie not in the avoidance of established forms but in the imaginative use of them. In sum then, their view is that the templates they build for us will help us organize our writing better as well as improve originality.
I agree. In my view, the types of templates that the authors recommend help us more clearly understand what we want to write and improve how we organize the structure of our response. For instance, the template from Exercise 1 makes writing easier as it clarifies what we need to point out in the response and exactly respond to the readings. In addition, I also believe that template has nothing to do with originality. Because templates do not contain contents, but only give you a format. What you want to say is still all depend on your thought.
Activity1
I’m now at Woodruff library because there is a power failure in Harris Hall. I had seldom stayed at library late at night. I surprisingly find out that the library at night is very crowded and lively. People around me seem to be in very different moods, some of whom carry very serious face, maybe are tortured by due days, some of whom are happily chatting with one another. For the first time, I feel like library is not an inanimate space but a sensitive place. People come and go: they study here, eat here, fall in love here or maybe break up here. It is an abstract image of how college life is. In the future, I would love to spend more time here.
Activity2
When I was very young, I was very bad at writing. I could not even write an attractive story. However, starting from secondary school, I began to find the feeling of how to write a good story. I believed that I got this big improvement because at that time, every week I read a magazine from a very popular Chinese young-adult writer – Guojingming. Though the public always criticizes him, I still think he is a good storyteller. In his magazine, there are many short stories, which contain only thousands of words. Each of them, though short, impressed me a lot. These amazing stories also accompanied with critics after, which points out which parts is good and which part is lame. As a result, I began to pay attention to how I organize my story and progressed a lot on writing.
Activity3
What is a writer :
Who Writes; creativity; organize words; storyteller; demonstrator; recorder; Who use words to express thoughts
Activity4
I love to write at a place where there is only myself. I dislike people watching me while I am writing. I prefer writing use a pen to use a computer especially writing on a white paper without rules, that makes me feel like writing is more like an art. Paper without rules means writing without limits. You can writer wherever you want and write very big sized words, even you can use drawings to substitute your words. Background music is important for me while I am writing, sometimes I do not care what I am listening at all, I just want some quick rhythm music to make me high and happy and inspires me to write more creative words.
Activity5
I am a very curious person. I love to try different new things and have the courage to try everything out. I have always tried to solve every problem by myself, because I have the belief that what others can do, I must can as well. I learn different things in different fields to become well rounded. However, sometimes I found myself knows everything but cannot be professional with any of them. It is somewhat sat. But what I find this useful is that these broad knowledge help me make friends more easily because I always share the same topic with others.
Activity6
When I wrote the last piece I suddenly found out that my well-rounded knowledge make many people willing to find me for help. I love the feeling of being needed. Helping people gives me a sense of fulfillment and my broad interests worth the money and time I spend on them. I will keep enrich my experience in more fields and get more and more completed. During this process, I believe I will met many different awesome people and learn a lot from them.
