Text-Based Genres Memoir Rhetorical Analysis
For the text-based genre memoir, I draw and write a story of my childhood. The story told a story of my neighborhood and me. The drawing and story express how the warmhearted people of the neighborhood helped me out and shaped me. Because this is a non-fiction story, which illustrates my experience when I was young. As far as I am concerned, it is a memoir.
The first picture and paragraph demonstrate a daily normal of mine and create a harmonious atmosphere, which is a foreshadowing for the rest of the story. Moreover, this harmonious relationship exists between people of the neighborhood community where I was born and raised.
The second picture is very imagery. A only big crying face can lead people to imagine the worry and helplessness I was undergoing at that time. In the description words, I repeatedly use the word crying to stress that at that time I was so vulnerable that I was too young to deal with this situation. I use the pathos mode to evoke a strong feeling of sympathy from my audience. Also, the people who turned back represent that I do not know where to look for help and nobody noticed my great fear and scare.
The third and fourth picture, apparently, is not as depressed as the second one. Fortunately, I was living in a kindhearted community that everyone is eager to help others. Indeed, the relationship with our neighborhood community is very close that in the leisure time my grandma always chats with people in the market or play Mahjong with them. Thus, the vendor people and I were not only trading relationship but also more like friends. And the aunt lived next-door was even more copse than relatives. In traditional Chinese idiom, there is a saying that demonstrate that “A far-off relative is not as helpful as a near neighbor.” I truly agree with these words. Place has great impact on people that people share one place may get some similar property and naturally eliminate those who do not have this property. Place connects people which may not have any relationship. Place builds friendship between strangers. In my story, when there were people who noticed that I was lost, they both firstly tried to appease me and then helped me figure out what to do.
The fourth paragraph is what my grandma taught me through this experience. Of course she was worried when I was lost. However, she had faith in the kindness of people in our community. She is also a generous person to others in our neighborhood. Therefore, along with worry and anxiety, she also held a feeling of trust. That is a feeling of secure this place and people in this place create for us. This is unique and not very common in many other societies. After this experience, my grandma, as a primary school teacher, taught me not only need to be careful in the future but also need to become a person just like those who helped you out of the dilemma.
Though I was very young at that time, my grandma has been keeping mention this story again and again to remind me to be a nice and kind person. Afterwards, it becomes my first moral principle. No matter where I’ve been, I help people as long as I was able to lend a hand. Even though I did not earn money nor are there compliment every time, I enjoyed doing this. Because I knew that these trivial things for us may have great impact on others who received your favor. And also, taking the initiative to help before they ask is also essential because people may have many reasons not to ask when they are in trouble. This is what I have always been doing and will keep doing in the future.
The story starts with a harmonious beginning which create a feeling of cozy. Then it shifts to a block which will evoke people’s empathy. And then, as the story goes on, the obstacle is erased and leads to a happy ending. Finally, lesson learned from this experience is very inspiring.
Overall, this is a true story about my personal experience. I believe it is a memoir. The story implies how a place shapes a person’s identity and personality. I do not directly write and draw the impact the place grants. However, it is obvious that what people in my neighborhood community do influences what I do. Their behavior is a epitome of our place and is also a paragon of mine. I learned language from them; I learned knowledge from them; what’s more important, I learned kindness from them. The appearance of this place may change a lot over years; however, its moral will never change.
